ISO 42001 GOVERNANCE

AI roles and responsibilities

Part of: Annex A.3: Internal Organization

Description

Defined and communicated roles for AI development, deployment, governance, and oversight with clear authorities and accountabilities.

Implementation Guidance

RACI Matrix

Create an AI-specific RACI (Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, Informed) matrix covering: AI system design, data management, model training, testing and validation, deployment approval, monitoring, and incident response. Assign roles to specific individuals, not just teams.

Key Roles to Define

Establish and document: AI System Owner (business accountability), AI Ethics Lead (ethical review authority), Data Steward (data quality and privacy), Model Risk Manager (validation oversight), AI Security Lead (adversarial risk). Define minimum qualifications for each role.

Communication

Publish role assignments in organizational directory. Include AI responsibilities in job descriptions and performance objectives. Brief all AI team members on their specific authorities and escalation paths.

Evidence Requirements

  • AI RACI matrix covering all lifecycle phases
  • Role descriptions with AI-specific responsibilities
  • Organizational chart showing AI governance structure
